Laser eye surgery, which is also known as LASIK (Laser -Assisted in situ Keratomileusis), is a kind of refractive surgery which is performed to correct eye problems such as astigmatism, hypermetropia, and myopia. Since eyes are one of the most delicate organs in the body, you need to be very careful once the surgery is complete. So if you are planning to go through with laser eye surgery or if you have already goten it done, you should know all the important instructions that you need to follow post LASIK surgery.

Give your eyes some rest for a few hours after the procedure

Once the surgery is done, it is advisable to go home, put your feet up, close your eyes, and rest as much as possible. This will not only reduce irritation and discomfort, but also promote faster recovery.

Avoid touching and rubbing your eyes

You should never rub or touch your eyes post laser surgery, as the LASIK flap that has been incorporated into your eye needs some time to stick to the cornea. If you will rub or touch your eyes, it might dislodge, needing repositioning or further surgery to get it back in place. Furthermore, touching your eyes frequently might transmit germs to your eyes, which in turn will increase the risk of inflammation or infection.

Wear dark glasses when you go out

Since sunlight can have negative impact on the healing process, it is advisable to wear dark sunglasses whenever you go out of your home. Not only sunlight, but any kind of harsh light can have negative impact on your eyes. So make sure you avoid direct exposure of light for at least first few days. Also, make sure your sunglasses are branded and offer 100% UV protection.

Wear a protective eye shield while sleeping

After the surgery, there is quite a fair possibility that you accidentally rub or poke your eyes while sleeping. However, if you will wear a protective eye shield, you can protect your eyes from any such potential damage. It is advisable to wear this eye protective shield for at least first 3 days after the laser eye surgery.

Do not drive for a few days

You should not drive any vehicle for a certain period of time after your LASIK procedure. Usually, after the surgery your doctor will want you to see you the next day in order to check whether your eye-sight is within the legal limits for safe driving or not. So, it is always safer to follow your doctor's instructions for speedy recovery.

Avoid swimming for at least two weeks

In order to reduce the risk of infection or eye irritation from contaminated water, you should stay out of swimming pools for at least two weeks after the laser surgery. Not only swimming pools, but you should also stay out of rivers, lakes, hot tubs, seas, and oceans for one month after the procedure.

Hopefully, the above mentioned instructions will help you to recover faster from your LASIK surgery. However, keep in mind that Lasik surgery is not perfect, as there is no surety that you will have 100% glasses-free vision. However, in most cases, people get rid of their contact lenses or glasses after the LASIK procedure.
