3 Ways To Improve Your Swimming Pool Efficiency

The reality is that pools use a lot of water, okay, you knew that. Sometimes we don't realize just how much water and time we are wasting by not using a more efficient filtration system. Did you know that many pools are fitted with sand or DE filters that require backwashing to clean them, and that backwashing a filter can use 240 to 400 gallons of water every time you have to clean? So how can we remedy this?

1. If you must use a filter that requires backwashing, use a bigger one.
This is a simple solution that does not require you change very much about your current system. Simply start using a bigger filter then the recommended size for your pool. Your pool may require a 2.4 square foot sand filter or a Triton 60. Instead, use a Triton 100. The more filter you have, the longer it takes to fill it and the fewer times you will have to clean it.

2. Get a pre-filtration system installed.
A pre-filtration system will remove 90 of debris above 20 microns before they enter the main filter. This will keep your filter and cleaner and require less cleanings. These types of systems work with Sand, DE, and Cartridge filters. Using a pre-filtration system can save you over 1,000 gallons of water per year because of less frequent backwashing.

3. Change the type of filter you are using.
Instead of using sand or DE filters that require backwashing, use a cartridge filter. Cartridge filters use significantly less water to clean. You simply remove the filter and hose it off. The typical cartridge filter use 5 to 10 gallons of water per cleaning- that's a huge difference compared to the 240 to 400 used in the backwashing process.

Admittedly, saving water is not enough of a motivation for one to change their filtration systems or habits, but remember you will save time and money was well. You will spend less time cleaning your pool and more time enjoying it. Contact your local pool professional for more information on how to make these money, time, and water saving differences today!
