Closing Your Pool for the Season: Winter Pool Covers and Accessories

by Pool Builders on 12-08-2011 in Articles

As the warm days of summer draw to a close, it's time to think about closing your in ground pool and installing winter pool covers and accessories. Winter covers prevent debris such as tree leaves from falling into your in ground pool. Additional accessories such as air pillows ensure that the cover stays in place and doesn't sag or fall into the pool.

When choosing a winter pool cover, it's best to choose solid covers over leaf nets. While both prevent leaves from falling into the water, only a solid cover helps prevent algae build up. This makes opening your pool in the springtime much easier, as the water will be cleaner and the entire swimming pool will require less time to clean. A leaf net allows rain and melted snow into your pool, which could require additional pool chemicals.

Choose a winter pool cover sized to fit your swimming pool with an overlap for the edges. Some covers are made from special plastics such as Armorkote, a material which withstands swimming pool chemicals without staining. Edges, seams and loops should be double stitched for added strength and longevity. The AquaMaster Winter Cover, for example, is made with Armorkote,

Air pillows are used with above-ground pools and winter covers. An air pillow creates a bump in the middle of the swimming pool underneath the cover. Use more than one air pillow in case one breaks during the winter. This helps any rainwater, snow, ice or leaves that fall onto the cover slide to the sides, rather than pile up in the middle and weigh down the cover. You can easily clean off anything that falls to the sides if necessary or during spring opening. One of the most frustrating things that can happen with covers is having heavy snow collect in the center of a pool cover, pushing it down and potentially ripping the side seams and grommets. Using an air pillow prevents this by displacing the weight off to the sides and making it easier to clean.

Even if you live in a warm part of the country and snow is unlikely, pool covers help keep your swimming pool clean and algae-free and stop debris like leaves, pine needles, and sticks from falling into your pool. When it comes time to open your pool up for the season next spring, you'll be glad you invested in a high-quality cover for your swimming pool.
