Five Reasons To Try Swimming

Lifetime activity for all. Swimming is a 'lifetime' activity for everyone, as it can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. It does not put any strain on joints or connective tissues and is therefore accessible to pregnant women, the disabled, obese and elderly. For babies and children swimming offers a magical experience and freedom of movement that they will love and there are often areas specially designed for younger swimmers at your local pool.

Never leave children unattended in a pool and always ensure that the correct buoyancy equipment is used where appropriate. If you are not a strong swimmer always stay within your depth.

Social activity. Swimming is great fun and can be enjoyed by the whole family or by friends who wish to inject some fun into their fitness regime. Try aqua aerobics with a swimming buddy or simply splash around with the children. Either way you are spending quality time with loved ones and improving your health without even thinking about it!

Therapy. Swimming has a very soothing effect on body and mind and regulates breathing so it can be a great way to ease tension and relax. Water has long been used for various types of therapy and can benefit a number of conditions making a visit to the pool a potentially therapeutic experience.

Life saving. According to a recent survey as many as one in five adults are unable to swim. I don't think we need to discuss any further the importance of being able to swim, particularly for children who may be especially vulnerable to water related accidents.

Fitness. Whether you decide to use swimming as a warm up for another activity or as your main fitness focus it is a great way to build up cardiovascular fitness and burn calories - up to 900 an hour! There is also nothing quite like jumping into the pool following a land work out.

Always consult your doctor before starting a new activity.
