Great Places For Sunny California Winter Getaway

If the cold winter temperatures are getting to you, one of the most popular regions in the country to visit in winter is Southern California. The area has many resorts awaiting your exploration, whether on the sea or in the desert.

Here are three of our favorite places for chasing those winter blues away:

What better way to escape winter than to go to the desert? Palm Springs is the obvious choice for many Californians, but families might also want to take a look at a resort east of Palm Springs called the Resort at Indio.

This place is only a few years old and boats a total of 453 units in a setting that is very much like a water theme park. There are swimming pools, sprinklers for the kids and, our favorite, a man-made river to float inner tubes on. The largest swimming pool is 5000 square feet so you can see that the resort does not skimp. Just across the street is a major golf course.

This is a family kind of place and the units are really vacation rentals rather than hotel rooms. They're very spacious and there are facilities throughout the resort that make it easy for families to gather to play games or have barbecue picnics. There is a complete kitchen in each unit as well as multiple bedrooms.

Another favorite for us is the Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach in Oxnard, California. This destination actually feels like one of those Mexican beach resorts that you pay a lot of money in air fare to go visit. With Mandalay Beach, you just drive to your "Mexican" beach vacation.

The Oxnard area is becoming more popular every year with California tourists because it's a bit off the beaten path, yet still has some of the best beach scenery on the West Coast. It's only an hour drive north from Los Angeles, but it still feels somewhat undeveloped.

The Mandalay Beach Resort is the crown jewel of the area and features an attractive early California Spanish design. It's a huge resort with 249 suites and lots of palm trees, tropical plants and even waterfalls to give it that lush, tropical feel. Just order a Mexican beer or margarita and you're in Mexico.

The rooms are all suites and they are comfortable and spacious. They are apartment-like, complete with refrigerator, microwave and other conveniences. Ask for one that opens out onto the beach where you'll have a tale and patio chairs with a lawn area nearby.

Finally, we can't discuss winter getaways in California without mentioning San Diego. This is a long-time favorite with travelers, and is our favorite part of the state. There are many mega hotels in the area and lots of waterfront and spectacular views.

On a recent visit we enjoyed a two-room suite at the Manchester Grand Hyatt - and what a great time we had at this four-star urban resort. We had a 20th floor suite and we could see Coronado Island, San Diego Harbor and lots of the San Diego waterfront including nearby Seaport Village. We could see just down below us the hotel's spa deck and lap pool and then looking eastward we could see the roof-top tennis courts.

Staying at the Manchester Grand Hyatt is a little like staying on a cruise ship. There is everything you'll need right on the property and the architecture is grandiose and spectacular. And, when you are located right on San Diego Bay, you can't beat the views and availability of nearby attractions.

One of our favorite spots to explore is nearby Seaport Village - a combination of shops and restaurants all situated along a colorful waterfront path that seems to have ample sunshine no matter when you're visiting. It's truly one of the best places in California to spend a few leisure hours - or days - and the Manchester Grand Hyatt is just a stone's throw away.
