How to Keep Your Kids Safe Around Water

Spending a hot summer day at the local beach, lake, water park or swimming pool can be a great way to beat the heat while having some fun. As a parent, you have to be careful about the safety of your kids amidst all the fun.

While learning how to swim is a very important life skill that every child should know, water can also be very dangerous even for a child skilled at swimming. Water related accidents can happen in the flash of a second, which makes it all the more important that your child follow a few safety guidelines around water bodies.

As per the YMCA, one of the pioneers in swimming instruction in the country, you must follow these tips to ensure the safety of your children around a water body:

1. Your child must be supervised by an adult at all times.

2. Never allow your child, or for that matter, even yourself, to swim alone.

3. In case of an emergency, you will need to know first aid, CPR, and other lifesaving techniques. Be prepared by learning these in advance.

4. Always keep a fully stocked first aid kit, phone, emergency numbers, and other safety equipment at hand.

5. Always follow the rules posted at a water body. The depths of swimming pools vary; make sure that you and your children are aware of this fact.

6. If you have a pool in your backyard, make sure that it has a security fence with a self closing gate and childproof lock around it. Also ensure that the pool has posted rules, more than one ring buoys, and easy access to a first aid kit.

7. If you have an above-ground pool, you must secure and lock out the steps, or even consider removing them completely when not in use to ensure that unsupervised children do not get access to it.
