Having a swimming pool is a wonderful addition to any home. Finding out how to maintain a swimming pool yourself gives you freedom from expensive pool care services that you have to book time with. Maintaining a swimming pool yourself is easier than you think!

The first step to do it yourself pool care is to regularly test the chemicals in your water. This makes all of the other jobs easier and more effective, and is your best line of defense against harmful algae and bacteria, which can be very difficult to get control of once they start. Keep a simple test kit on hand to ensure your water's chemistry is properly maintained. These are the five elements you need to stay on top of:

1.    Chlorine - this important chemical kills bacteria, prevents the growth of algae and keeps your water well sanitized. Keep chlorine levels between 0.5-3.0 ppm.

2.    pH - this is a measure of your water's acidity. Proper levels are between 7.2-7.6 ppm.

3.    Total alkalinity - this is a measure of the alkaline material present in your pool water. Proper balance is between 80-120 ppm.

4.    Calcium hardness - this is the amount of dissolved calcium in your pool's water, and the range should be kept within 250-500 ppm.

5.    Stabilizer - this is cyanuric acid, which acts to stabilize your water's chlorine levels. Using a stabilizer prevents the chlorine from being absorbed too quickly by the sun's rays. Your chlorine will last up to three and a half times as long when you use a stabilizer. Keep these levels between 30-60 ppm.

In addition to good water chemistry, it is very important that you clean your pool's filters regularly. These collect dirt and debris, so keeping them clean protects your water.

You also need to clean your pool's skimmers regularly. Doing so will prolong the life of your filter, as they collect larger debris, stopping it from reaching the filter. Keep your pool's walls and floor clean with thorough brushing and vacuuming.

These are the basic elements in how to maintain a swimming pool. Your pool will be a beautiful oasis for you to enjoy!
