Keep Your Kids Safe at the Pool on Holidays

Being in a new environment can be exciting and fun for children but parents should always keep in the mind some basic safety issues when on holidays in the sun:

1. Be aware of sun safety by applying sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or 50 for very young children. This should be applied before going out into the sun and regularly re-applied at least every two hours or more if your child is in and out of the water.

2. Keep young children in the shade as much as possible and avoid the hottest midday sun by moving indoors if possible.

3. If your children are fair-skinned it is a good idea to buy sunsuits for them rather than swimsuits which offer far less coverage. Many of these UV suits offer a sun protection of UPF50+ which acts as a great barrier from powerful uv rays. Another good investment is a legionnaire style hat which will protect your little one's head and cover the often forgotten skin on the neck.

4. Although some children may refuse to wear them, it is a good idea to get them used to sunglasses to protect their eyes. Bright sunshine can cause damage to the cornea and eyesight problems such as cataracts can form later in life due to too much exposure to UV light.

5. Make sure your child drinks plenty of fluids in the sun to avoid dehydration.

6. Regarding water safety, when near the pool, make sure children are supervised at all times and are either wearing a swim vest or armbands.

7. Do not assume that because your child can swim they are not at risk of drowning.

8. If there is a pool gate make sure it is locked whenever the pool is not in use.

9. Only allow children to use inflatable toys when an adult is present in the pool.

10. Make sure your child is aware of water safety - teach them to walk and not run at the pool edge, not to dive in the shallow end and not to dunk other children when playing in the water.

11. It is also a good idea to get a water safety alarm. Although this should never replace parental vigilance it does give you some extra peace of mind when your kids are around water.

Being aware of these safety measures before you get on the plane can help make your family holiday enjoyable and safe.
