Keeping Kids Safe Around Pools

Summer is fun when you spend it near pools, lakes, ponds or beaches to relax and cool down. However, these places offer unique dangerous, especially for young children. Experts estimate that about 1,000 children die every year by drowning. The sad fact is that this usually happens in home swimming pools. To keep your kids safe and have a great summer, here are some important reminders to consider:

Always supervise your kids. This is the most important rule to follow since an incident can happen even when a child is left for only a few seconds. Be alert if your kid goes swimming. Don't rely on other people to watch him.

Protect your kid with inflatables or life vests. This wont replace your supervision but it will give you more time to react if something happens. Think of it as an added layer of security.

Learn how to swim together with your kid. Get help from qualified instructors. But don't assume that this alone will prevent accidents from occurring. Again, constant supervision is a must regardless of your child's swimming skills.

Install a fence at least four feet high around the pool. This must separate the pool from the house and play area of the yard. Make use of gates that self-close and self-latch. The latches must be hard for your child to reach.

Your next line of defense should be door locks and alarms. If the lock is found high on the door, it will effectively prevent your child from getting out of the house and wandering near the pool. A pool alarm is essential since it will tell you if someone is in your pool.
