Learn to Swim Without Ever Touching a Pool - Is It Possible?

Everything is done online nowadays, even things that we always believed could only be done through practical experience. One of these things, it now seems, is swimming. When searching for online swimming lessons, you will find a huge amount of results. This is because clever internet marketing people know that people aren't always able to get to a pool, usually because of distances. But is it really possible to learn how to swim without actually swimming? Yes and no€¦

Swimming lessons can, to some degree, be taken from the comfort of your own home. You can take part in various tutorials delivered online, which are designed in such a way that you will learn the various moves necessary to swim properly. Initially, these courses were designed to help parents whose children are actually taking swimming lessons to instruct their children outside of the pool. Now, however, they are offered as a real alternative to actual lessons.

A lot of people who have used these tutorials say they have been incredibly beneficial and they feel that they would describe themselves as strong swimmers, even if they have never been in a pool. They know all the necessary moves for the different strokes, understand the importance of body position, know when to put their face in the water and more. They have learned all of this by watching videos or reading various files. However, they still have never touched the water. So can they swim?

Pros and Cons of Online Lessons

The reality is that you cannot swim just by learning to copy moves and reading about swimming without ever trying it. However, that is not to say that these types of lessons are useless. For starters, they tend to give people who would normally never come near a pool or other body of water the confidence to at least give it try.
Not just that, people who have used the information to actually learn to swim often end up stronger swimmers quicker than others. They have a greater understanding of what a move looks like, what the stroke does, the importance of speed and body position and more.
On the other hand, there is a risk that people honestly believe they can swim as well as anyone that has had proper lessons and just fling themselves in a pool. If they were to do this, they would face a nasty surprise and potentially end up with a mouth (and nose) full of water.
