One of the most popular ski destinations in Western Europe is the les Menuires ski resort near Saint-Martin-de-Belleville in the French Alps. It is one of three major ski resorts in The Three Valleys region. This resort, 1850 metres (6069 feet) above sea level, has great ski runs for all levels of skiers, first rate accommodations, a state-of-the-art lift system, and magnificent scenery. In a region in which ski resorts can be rather pricy, the les Menuires ski resort is known for its very affordable rates. The low prices and the family-friendly policies of the resort account for its great popularity. For families that like to ski together, this is a terrific resort for children and adults alike.

A Winter Wonderland for Children

The les Menuires ski resort is the place to go whether your children are babies, teenagers, or any age in between. Babies three months and up can be left in good care at the nurseries in the Piou-Piou villages in Les Bruyeres and La Croisette. There is a mini club where children from 31 months to five years can participate in all sorts of fun activities under the watchful eyes of trained staff. For older girls and boys there are children's clubs with a variety of theme activities. If your kids are old enough to ski, the resort has some excellent beginners slopes, and there are top notch instructors to help first-time skiers of all ages learn the basics. Kid-sized skis and other equipment are available for rent. Of course, there is much more for youngsters at the les Menuires ski resort than just skiing. This resort really is a winter wonderland for children. In Lugeland there are two 200 metre (656 foot) toboggan runs where kids and adults can zoom downhill on rubber ring toboggans and 'magic carpets' take them back to the top. If your kids are not big enough for the toboggans, take them over to La Croisette to the Castle Slide. This is a snow structure on which tykes can slide to the bottom on sleds called bum boards. This ride is a lot of fun and it's free, but the children must be accompanied by adults.

More Fun for Kids

Children aged six to twelve at the les Menuires ski resort can take snowmobiling lessons at the Reberty section. The instructors are professionals, and they take the children out on a secure track. Teenagers are big fans of the Snowpark, where they can participate in a wide range of snow sports, including snowboarding, skier cross and modules. For kids aged twelve and up there is a terrific three kilometre (1.8 mile) toboggan run called the Bob and Rock. Then there is the Buggy Quad Track. Kids get on single-seat or two-seat quad bikes to ride on snow and ice. For this ride, drivers must be at least fourteen, and passengers no younger than six. For kids who like ice-skating, there is also a great outdoor rink.

More for the Kids - Beyond Snow

The operators of the les Menuires ski resort take great pride in running a family-friendly business, and they know that it takes diversity to keep kids occupied and entertained. For that reason, not everything in the resort that is set up for young people is geared toward activities involving ice and snow. Besides a heated outdoor swimming pool, the resort has an indoor swimming pool and Fun Park where children of all ages can have a great time with trampolines, pools full of plastic balls, bouncy castles, and children's modules. Be sure to ask about family passes.
