A swimming pool is great source to relax and tone up your body. It's no fun swimming in water filled with algae. Whether you have a private or public pool, its maintenance can be simple, painless and quick, and here's how:

1. To keep the swimming pool in a fresh condition, buy a good chemical test kit. The kit is used to check water of two most important factors : Chlorine and pH. Chlorine kills harmful germs and restricts formation of any fungi on the surface and bottom. pH determines the overall water quality and gives the indication of acid or alkaline. The pH of water is ideally maintained within the range of 7.2 to 7.6.

pH below or above this range can result in irritation in eyes, corrosion or strong odors.

2. Make sure to skim water daily to clear it of any fallen leaves, wrappers or debris.

3. The pool filter should be run for at least 10 hours a day. If the swimming pool is visited by many bathers, the duration can be increased accordingly. The filter cartridges trap suspended particles and stop them from getting back in the pool. Filtration system carries out the following functions:

i. Backwash it is used to flush the filter when it becomes loaded with debris and dirt.

ii. Rinsing it is done to wash out any dirt in the pipes. It's only a 20 seconds activity but ensures that the water drainage channels are clean.

iii. Circulation this is the process of rotating water in the pool so that it doesn't become stationary.

4. The bottom and sides of the swimming pool should be brushed once in a week to avoid any discoloration or formation of algae. Brush towards the drain so that dirt gets trapped in the filter dispenser and is thrown out from the system.

5. Vacuum the floor on monthly basis to get rid of solids that do not float into suspension automatically.

6. Use algaecides if you have greasy or slippery film on the water or within the pool. Algaecides not only kill different forms of algae but also prevent its growth.

Now that you know how to keep your swimming pool in a sparkling condition, it's time to have some wine, play music and enjoy a refreshing dip in the water.
