Salinas, CA: Swimming Good For Seniors Blood Pressure & Arteries: View From A Private Duty Caregiver Serving Carmel, Carmel Valley, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Gilroy, Gonzalez, Greenfield, Hollister, King City, Marina, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Salinas, San Juan Bautista, Seaside And Soledad California A study in the American Journal of Cardiology found that swimming reduces blood pressure and improves artery health in elderly adults. Previous studies have found a similar linkage with walking, but this is the first one to focus on swimming. The 43 adults aged 50 to 80 years which were studied saw no decline in weight or body fat but their systolic blood pressure fell 7% and their arteries showed signs of becoming more elastic and responsive to changes in blood flow. This is great news. In Monterey, there are reasonable places seniors can go to exercise and swim like the Monterey Sports Center. Another option is Kernes Adaptive Aquatics, a non-profit which has an adaptive aquatics program which provides warm water exercise programs that helps children and adults with disabilities gain strength, mobility and confidence. The 92-degree pool has staff that provides 15,000 hours of instruction per year. We have senior clients who have had swimming regimens as part of their weekly activities and it does indeed not only make them feel better physically, but getting out and interacting with others is helpful as well.About Richard Kuehn & Family inHome Caregiving of Monterey:After more than a decade of caregiving, both in a professional environment and for a 97 year old family member I was dissatisfied with service from local caregiving agencies. I became convinced of the need for a service which provides very personal assistance to the elderly and founded Family inHome Caregiving serving the Monterey Peninsula.
