Swimming Lessons and Safety For Your Child

Swimming is one of the few sports that gives the entire body a good workout.

As much as swimming can benefit adults, it can also be considered an activity for your child. I remembered that my parents enrolled me with a swimming course during primary three and I've enjoyed every minute of it and never looked back! The benefits are in abundance, some of it includes:

o Exercise. Swimming gives your child some form of exercise and aids in physical development, body co-ordination and flexibility.

o Equip him with a new skill. Having a new skill is definitely better than having none at all! Your child will have a sense of security if he or she is near a water body.

o The Sun. As parents, we are sometimes too over protective of our children going under the sun. The sun's rays are important in generating Vitamin D in the body, and is important for a child to have healthy and strong bones.

o Relaxation. Spent too much time on studying? Other than the TV and computer games, swimming is a form of relaxation too.

As always, safety is an issue. Some of the guidelines for parents regarding pool safety:

o Keep an eye on your child, do not leave him unattended at all times.

o Strictly no swimming under rainy conditions. Beware of lightning hazards.

o Ensure he swims in the correct pool, some areas are deeper than others.

o Remind him of some rules such as no running or pushing. A fall or a slip is hazardous.

o It will be helpful to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Just in case something happens, you can help your child, or you could even help others around you

o Never touch an electrical item when his hands are wet. This could lead to a huge electric shock, or in worse case, electrocution.

Different kids have different personalities, some may like swimming, some may not. But one thing is for sure, I would rather my child be able to swim. There are many advantages to it doesn't it? It is a life long skill that will stay with him once acquired.
