Swimming Pool Fence Requirements

by Pool Builders on 02-09-2010 in Articles

A vinyl fence can be a perfect, low-maintenance fit to accommodate your pool code. Obviously the purpose of pool codes is to specify various dimensions of a fence to prevent or control access to the pool, therefore there are some general pool codes guidelines to abide by. And at the end of this article I will list some pre-manufactured vinyl fence styles that are pool code ready.

Height: The height must be 48" above grade, measured on the side of the fence away from the pool.
Vertical Clearance: The vertical clearance between the bottom of the fence and grade can be at a maximum of 2" measured on the side of the fence away from the pool. However if the fence is mounted on top of the pool structure, the maximum distance allowed between the top of the pool structure and the bottom of the fence is 4"
Openings: The openings in the fence shall not allow passage of a 4" diameter sphere.

If the fence is composed of horizontal (rails) and vertical members (pickets) where the distance between the tops of each horizontal member is less than 45", then:

- The horizontal members must be on the pool side of the fence and the spacing between the vertical members cannot exceed 1.75" in width. This also applies to any areas with decorative cutouts, spacing within the cutouts cannot exceed 1.75" in width.

If the fence is composed of horizontal (rails) and vertical members (pickets) where the distance between the tops of each horizontal member is greater than 45", then:

- Again, the horizontal members must be on the pool side of the fence, but here the spacing between the vertical members shall not exceed 4" in width. Also apply this to your decorative cutouts, spacing within the cutouts cannot exceed 4" in width.

Gates - Pool code also addresses the gates to be installed with the fence. All the same rules above apply to the gate as well, but in addition to that:

- The gate has to be equipped with some sort of lock device.
- The gate must open outward away from the pool.
- The gate must be self-closing and have a self-latching device.
- The release mechanism for the self-latching device must be located less than 54" from the bottom of the gate, be on the pool side of the gate, at least 3" from the top of the gate, and have no opening greater than 0.5" within 18" of the release mechanism.
