This will be your first line of defense again the growth of harmful bacteria and algae. There are five basic elements of swimming pool water chemistry that all work together to keep the water stable. The first element is chlorine, which kills bacteria, prevents algae from growing, and keeps your water well sanitized.  Chlorine should be kept at levels between 0.5 - 3.0 ppm. The second element is pH balance, which is a measure of the water's acidity. A safe pH range is between 7.2 - 7.6 ppm. The third element is total alkalinity, which measures the alkaline material in the water, and should be kept within 80 - 120 ppm. The fourth element is calcium hardness, which is the amount of dissolved calcium in the water. A proper range for this is 250 - 500 ppm. The fifth element for water chemistry is cyanuric acid, which is a stabilizing agent for your water's chlorine level. This helps prevent the chlorine from being absorbed too rapidly by the sun. Using a stabilizer will help your chlorine last up to 3 1/2 times longer. Your stabilizer levels should be within 30 - 60 ppm.
