As Spring time approaches and children are spending more time outside swimming is on the minds of everyone. As drownings are NOT seasonal it is just a known fact that people think of pools and swimming more during the spring and summer and drownings are at their highest this time of year. Are these preventable is the question and the answer is absolutely.

As an aquatic expert who has been in the field for over 25 years our expert advice to parents is to understand the layers of protection needed to avoid these tragedies. Most important is SUPERVISION. Supervision is the #1 most important layer of protection. Don't ever assume that even if your child can swim that they don't need adult supervision. Another important layer is a pool fence. In addition a safety entrapment drains. These are so dangerous and it is imperative that you know how to turn off your pool pump if a child's hair or clothing get caught up in one. Swimming lessons are vital, as soon as your child is crawling they need to know how to save themselves if they fall into a body of water. CPR is another very important layer of protection. Every adult that cares for a child needs to know the important steps of CPR.

The CDC stats indicate that 75% of drowning victims are age 12 to 25 months old. 65% drown in the family pool and 33% drown in a neighbor or relatives pool, 77% were missing less than 5 minutes. For every child that drowns 4 are hospitalized and survive from the drowning.

Drowning is an epidemic that this country has not yet embraced. Knowledge is power. Understanding the precautions (layers of protection) are the key to preventing these tragedies. I urge parents to supervise their children at all times and never assume that someone else is watching them out by the pool.

Swimming is a wonderful sport and great exercise but as any other sport there are specific rules and guidelines that need to be followed for safety.

Make it a Water Safe Season.
