To perfect your freestyle and backstroke kicking you can do exercises on land that will help greatly when you get in the water. What you need to keep in mind about your kick is that it is not giving you the most propulsion, it is giving you a good body position so that you have less drag as you move through the water.

To perfect your freestyle and backstroke kicking you need to kick from the hip. Do not bend your knees because it will create a large amount of drag on your body. You can practice kicking from the hip as you sit at the edge of a pool or even on the floor.

As you sit, lean back slightly and practice raising and lowering your legs one at a time without bending your knee. Do this as an exercise to add strength to your legs also. Try to do at least twenty repetitions for each leg a few times a day.

When trying to perfect your freestyle and backstroke kicking, it is also important to keep your toes pointed. If your toes are not pointed out to be in a straight line with your leg you will cause drag on your body.

Any part of you that is not straight in the water will push the water forward and create negative propulsion. To perfect your freestyle and backstroke kicking you will need to have good ankle flexibility. This will allow you to keep your toes pointed.

If your ankles are stiff, perform ankle stretches to improve your flexibility. Never force these stretches, the flexibility will come gradually. You can practice your swimming with fins on your feet, this forces your toes to stay pointed and will improve the flexibility of your ankles.

Another good way to stretch your ankles is simply by holding them with your hand and rotating your foot, and sitting on the floor with your legs underneath you bent at the knee so your ankle and foot are straight out. Gradually lift the front portion of knees up off the floor. Do only a few repetitions because you do not want to strain any muscles.

Remember to perfect your freestyle and backstroke kicking technique, you need to keep your legs straight when kicking, do not bend your knees. Point your toes and keep your feet pointed inwards so your big toes are almost touching each other. Any part of you that is not straight will cause drag and make it that much harder to propel yourself forward through the water.
