Swimming To Lose Weight

I decided to take up swimming to lose weight. I started on February 1st, 2010 and started swimming in the mornings at my local YMCA. I can say the results have been fantastic.

Not only have I lost inches and toned up, I actually feel a lot less stressed during the day. I've lost about 20 lbs in the process which is always a plus but more importantly I made a commitment to something and am actually sticking to it. Now don't get me wrong, getting up at the crack of dawn, driving 20 minutes to get into a sometimes freezing cold pool isn't my idea of fun but the feeling that comes when I'm finished is priceless.

I have always played organized sports in high school and college and when I got out of school and stopped playing those sports the weight gradually crept on. I decided it was time to start working out again and really try to get some weight off, not to mention I am getting married in the fall.

I've read different views on whether swimming is really a good sport to lose weight or not and I can tell you first hand that it is. It will increase your appetite but once you swim for 30-45 minutes the last thing you want to do is pig out on junk food. It just doesn't go with the positive thing that you just did for yourself. A snack in the morning before you go and then a good breakfast when you finish is all that is needed to start the day right.

Swimming is very therapeutic for me and I hope that after reading this article you check out your local YMCA and take a dip a couple of times a week. Your body will thank you. My back pain has all but gone away thanks to this wonderful low impact sport. Give it a shot, you have nothing to lose and if you find that it's not for you then perhaps the weight room or Pilate's area may benefit you.
