The Honua Kai Resort in Maui - A Honua Kai Resort Review

by Pool Builders on 11-19-2012 in Articles

We have been coming back again to Maui now for over 2 decades and opted to give a brand-new resort, the Honua Kai Resort, a go. We did some legwork and made a reservation for our 2BR Ocean view accommodation via the highly proficient Maui Resort Realty company (more concerning them later on).

Frankly, our initial impression of Honua Kai Resort was not the very best: we were not quite knowledgeable about the resort's North Kaanapali coastline area and when we arrived at the porte cochere outside the lobby, I felt underwhelmed by the pretty uninspiring hotel entryway and bordering landscape. We were immediately attended to by the administration representative and came into the lobby for quick overview of the property. Upon entering the hotel my trepidation diffused; the lobby area and were several of the most aesthetically satisfying resort focus points I had seen during my years paying a visit to Hawaii.

With a sense of anticipation we followed the representative up to our suite. The unit was current yet retained a particularly Hawaiian feel and I could not identify any kind of fault. The viewpoints were excellent; the ocean off in the distance with the pool areas in the foreground. The young man showed us around the rental and did a great job making us feel comfortable, having us know to call him at any time if we needed help.

I recall reading someplace that the name Honua Kai is Hawaiian for Land and Sea; after taking a stroll on this large, coastline front property (38 acres) I observed that the resort's title was wisely chosen. Substantial swaths of green yard, knolls and coastline lent a feeling of openness to the resort area rare in lots of typical Hawaiian beachfront hotels

I will mostly concentrate on which functions of the property my family members enjoyed the most:

Mom applauded the several physical fitness centers situated in both the Konea and Hokulani towers. She enjoyed getting her morning workout prior to beginning the day.
I enjoyed large swimming pool features, which undoubtedly covered at the very least 3 or 4 acres sandwiched by the beach and hotel. I enjoyed alternating in between swimming and body boarding in the sea, showering off and swimming in the swimming pool or sitting back in the hot tub.
The youngsters really delighted in purchasing goodies from the Aina market place, swimming pool spots, water slides and, of course, having the ability to hang out with various other kids their ages (we went at the time of Spring Break).

A couple of additional perceptions:

The Honua Kai Hotel property has every thing for everybody and IMHO was a truly excellent holiday experience.

There is a splendid walking path in front of Honua Kai Hotel that takes you to the popular Blackrock point in front of the Sheraton resort and back past the Royal Lahaina resort and Westin Kaanapali Sea resort. I really indulged in the possibility to experience the North side of Black rock; while a little quieter, it was in many ways a much more majestic setting then the South Kaanapali coastline region. Snorkeling is great in front of the resort-- but, be careful, I would certainly suggest getting in the water 75 yards to the south of the resort to prevent the coral.

Pros and Cons:

Family friendly
Villas are newly constructed and beautifully designated
Attractive grounds, pool areas and relaxed setting
Management company was very responsive regarding the few problems we had in the villa (some appliance quick fix problems)
Friendly staff

Market was great but costly for what they supplied
The area behind resort is not that attractive-- the resort is across the street from a business center (although can't complain about the views of West Maui Mountains)
I would have liked to see the health spa open-- the Honua Kai resort and spa is the recognized title and allegedly it will open up in the near future.

Overall impression:

Despite a couple of minor detracting concerns, the Honua Kai Resort challenges the Marriott's Maui Ocean club for very best hotel facilities, and accommodations are in a class by themselves.
I would highly recommend working with for making a reservation for the Honua Kai-- their rates are a lot better compared to the ones offered directly from the resort and their service was great from beginning to finish.
