The Importance of Pool Safety

Pool safety is a huge cause for concern through out the world, as every year thousands of children die due to drowning in pools. What is even more appalling is the fact that a majority of such deaths occur in residential swimming pools. Though every pool has its own set of safety rules and these are displayed in a big manner at every possible location, very less number of people are actually educated about these and take efforts to follow them. Another major mistake that all parents do is to assume that if a poll has safety devices in place, it is safe. Contrary to that, every parent has to ensure that he or she is very well educated with all safety regulations as well as first aid measures that need to be carried out in case any one is found drowned in a pool as well as the fact that safety is also common sense.

Pool safety begins with the first stone that you put to build a pool. When building a pool, all precautions like perfect water proofing as well as safe slopes have to be ensured so that there is no chance for any untoward incident to occur. Once operational, all safety devices have to be placed perfectly, in the correct positions so that in case of any emergencies, these are not found wanting. Some common safety accessories that are normally used in swimming pools include life jackets and baby floats. While life jackets are mostly used for boating purposes, baby floats are useful for children to be in water and enjoy the pool. While choosing baby floats, care has to be taken that these are symmetrical and do not topple under any circumstances, however the child uses it. Floats in attractive colors and sizes are available in the market.

Even though pool safety is mostly connected with the devices, common sense while using the pool is very critical. Diving into shallow areas can lead to head injuries as well as deaths. There should be nets which can prevent children from diving in the shallow part of the pool. Another important aspect of pool safety is to restrict carrying of food or beverages onto the poolside as well into the pool. This often causes contamination of the pool which can have serious health ramifications. Diving boards have often been cited as a major cause for accidents. Make sure that there is some adult supervising the children while they use a pool. Such responsible adults should also pay special attention to those using the diving board. Any child who is not a good swimmer should not be allowed to use the diving board.

Pool safety is not just about the precautions and devices, but also about educating the people who own or are supervising about the various first aid measures that should be given in case of an accident. In this way, you can ensure that even if there is an accident, it does not turn fatal.
