The Models Direct Guide to Looking Beach Beautiful

The summer has almost arrived, and even if it's too cold for British beaches, many will be heading abroad to soak up the sun on holiday. Baring your flesh may seem like a daunting prospect, so here are Models Direct's [] tips to becoming beach beautiful.

• Exfoliate. Exfoliating removes the top layer of dead skin cells and makes your skin appear smoother. Skin looks much better when it's smooth and moisturised. Moisturising, self-tanning and hair removal are all far more effective on exfoliated skin. Your skin will also appear far more even-toned after dry patches have been eliminated. You can use an exfoliating body wash with a loofah or exfoliating brush - anything with a rough surface will work. If you're off on a beach holiday and have forgotten to prepare your skin, try rubbing sand on to your legs. This is a popular method used by women in Brazil to increase circulation, help to remove cellulite and soften their skin.

• Cellulite. Cellulite affects around 90% of women at some point in their lives but still researchers aren't sure what actually causes it. The 'orange-peel' effect on the skin occurs when fat cells become trapped within fibres of inflexible supporting tissue. Although there is no miracle cure, there are things that can be done -although you might have to start working on them a while before you head to the beach. You can read some tips from Models Direct here [].

• Hair removal. There are loads of methods of hair removal including shaving, waxing, hair removal creams and laser treatment. Each person will have their preferred method and some may be better for different areas of the body. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages - for example, waxing will give longer lasting results but hurts more than shaving.

• Sun-kissed skin. Most people feel much better when they have tanned skin, whether it makes them feel healthier or believe it makes them look slimmer. However, Models Direct believe sun-kissed skin should be achieved by using fake tanners rather than damaging your skin sunbathing. Here Models Direct advise on how to get the most natural-looking fake tan. Another plus - think of all the extra time you'll have to do things on holiday when normally you'd be lazing around the pool!

• Conditioning. The sea salt, sunshine and chlorine that we're exposed to when on our summer holidays can suck the life from our hair, making it seem dull and flat. Conditioning your hair will help to prevent this.

• To protect your hair from the sun you could use a leave-in conditioner that has SPF protection which will also protect your scalp. The best way to protect your hair from the sun is to wear a hat or headscarf - it's also a great way of preventing the windswept look!

• Chlorine from swimming pools can bleach hair as well as making it dry and brittle. To prevent chlorine damage, make sure you at least rinse your hair with clean water if you don't have somewhere to wash it fully. Fill a large bottle with tap water to take with you if there isn't a shower close to the pool. If you are really concerned about chlorine damage to your hair you could try using a shampoo specifically made to remove chlorine.

• Hair feels horrible after swimming in the sea, so as with swimming in the pool you will undoubtedly want to wash it as soon as possible. As with the pool, take a bottle of water with you so you can at least rinse it after swimming.

• Style. Keep long hair out of the way and looking stylish by following the spring/summer hair trend of a braid.

• Humidity. Humidity can also have annoying effects on our hair such as making it frizzy or weighing it down. If this happens to you, there are some remedies. Work with your natural hair type - for example, if you're used to straightening your hair try to find something that will work with your curly hair instead. If your hair is fine and has a habit of looking lifeless in humid weather, have some layers cut in to give it more texture.
